We weren’t supposed to worry
about what came before.
But here we are together
on the ocean floor.
The watch’s gears are stuck
melded together with rust.
We feel so lonely,
aching and lacking trust.
Wait. This isn’t new.
It’s just the sort of thing we always do.
The earth just keeps on turning
Yet we can’t fall asleep
Because we’re overthinking
everything we’ve seen.
When we stop breathing
I hope nothing remains.
Absolutely nothing.
I can’t do it again.
Wait. This isn’t new.
It’s just the sort of thing we always do.
